A podcast is a series of audio or video digital media files that can be distributed over the internet by download, through web feeds to portable media players and/or personal computers. What makes podcasts unique is their ability to be "sydnicated" allowing users to subscribe to them. Once a user is subscribed to a podcast, new content is automatically downloaded the next time the user connects their device. The term "podcast" originated because the Apple iPod was used for the first podcasts. This is often misleading as podcasts can be delivered to and listened on just about any digital audio player.
Why Podcast?
Podcasts are easy and inexpensive to make, requiring recording software, a headset/microphone, a pc or mac. They can be uploaded to a web server, wiki, or blog and can be set up as an RSS (Really Simple Syndnicate) feed. They are fun to make, engage learners and allow students to express themselves in many creative ways. Podcasts also offer a great avenue for collaboration.
How Can We Use Podcasts in the Classroom?
Podcasts are used in many ways in a classroom environment. Newscasts, biographies, story book reading are just a few examples. Listen to a few below:
